Lago di Maggiore, Italy. August 2

I selected this as a good halfway stop between Leysin and Venice.  Lago di Maggiore is one of the lovely lakes in Northern Italy just south of the Alps.  My first photo is from the driver's seat of my Opel as we crossed the Simplon Pass.  The photo doesn't do justice to the beauty of the area.  The waterfall picture does a better job of depicting the dramatic scenery of the area.  The waterfall is very close to the border between Switzerland and Italy.  Unfortunately, rain was the dominant feature for a good portion of the day.  My first photos of the lake show overcast scenery, but the sun did peek out later in the evening and I got a couple of nice photos at that point.  This was my first time camping in Europe and I enjoyed the experience!  Some nice perks were the swimming pool (though closed due weather), play area (phoebe was embarrassed I took her photo with the little kids), and restaurant, bar, game areas.  Maybe this is like a koa in the states, definitely not a state park.  Drawbacks included:  no toilet paper, squatter toilets, (though luckily there were a few regular ones), paying for hot water, very small sites with no picnic tables and fire pits.  The clientele were primarily Dutch, German, and Italian.  I asked , and we were the only Americans.  I'm also proud to say that we were the only swimmers!  (Except for one old man as Gunnar just reminded me.). We swam in the evening when the sun came out and to us, conditions were perfectly tolerable.  To the Italians in particular, it was an intolerable cold wave.  One of the gals running the camp even walked around in winter boots.  I'd guess the temp was about 68 degrees.  We had storms in the night, but stayed dry, and all was well.  Though, we stopped at the super market for toilet paper in case we were to encounter another place lacking in the amenity.
